Indonesia national team head coach, John Herdman, has made a major decision by cutting 17 players from the provisional Garuda squad ahead of the March 2026 FIFA Series. The move has drawn significant attention, as several players who had been performing consistently at club level failed to make the final roster.
Initially, Herdman called up 41 players for the training camp. However, after a rigorous selection process, the squad was trimmed down to 24 players deemed most suitable for the team’s tactical needs.
This decision highlights that Herdman is not solely focused on individual performance, but also on how well players fit into the overall strategy for upcoming international matches.
Big Names Left Out
One of the most notable omissions is Ezra Walian. The 28-year-old forward had been impressive at club level and was widely expected to play a key role in the attacking line. However, he ultimately failed to secure a spot in the final squad.
In midfield, several well-known players such as Marc Klok, Ricky Kambuaya, Witan Sulaeman, and Egy Maulana Vikri were also excluded.
Meanwhile, in the forward line, young talents like Hokky Caraka and experienced attacker Stefano Lilipaly were unable to make the cut.
This clearly shows that no player is guaranteed a place in the squad, regardless of reputation or experience.
Tight Selection Across All Positions
The cuts were not limited to midfielders and forwards, but also affected defenders and goalkeepers. Goalkeeper Ernando Ari was the only shot-stopper dropped, while defenders such as Muhammad Ferrari and Yance Sayuri were also left out.
This indicates that Herdman conducted a comprehensive evaluation across all positions. He appears to be aiming for a balanced squad, combining experienced players with youthful energy.
The approach also suggests a shift in Indonesia’s playing style, prioritizing tactical flexibility and discipline.
Final Composition of the Garuda Squad
In the final squad list, Herdman retained several players considered capable of executing his tactical plans effectively. Names such as Maarten Paes, Elkan Baggott, Jay Idzes, and Ragnar Oratmangoen are included in the main squad.
In attack, a mix of young and experienced players is expected to provide stronger offensive power. Meanwhile, in midfield, naturalized players are expected to play a key role in maintaining balance.
This decision signals that the Indonesia national team is entering a new phase with a more competitive squad composition.

Focus on FIFA Series 2026
With the squad finalized, the Indonesia national team is now focused on preparing for the March 2026 FIFA Series. The tournament will serve as an important opportunity to test the team’s strength and address weaknesses ahead of bigger competitions.
Herdman is expected to use this moment to refine strategies and build team chemistry. Despite mixed reactions to the squad cuts, the decision is hoped to bring positive results for Indonesia’s future.
The increasing level of competition within the Garuda squad also reflects the growing quality of Indonesian football as it aims to compete on the international stage.
