Discord Requires Age Verification to Access Adult Content

Digital communication platform Discord has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting young users by launching a global teen safety system. This policy will be rolled out gradually starting in early March for all accounts, both new and existing, with the goal of creating a safer, healthier, and age-appropriate online environment for users aged 13 and above.

Through this update, all accounts will automatically use a “teen-friendly” experience as the default setting. The new features include restricted access to sensitive content, improved communication filters, and age-based controls that adapt to the user’s group without compromising privacy.

Savannah Badalich, Head of Product Policy at Discord, emphasized that this initiative is part of the company’s long-term strategy to protect teenagers in the digital space.

“Our work in safety is critical especially for teens which is why we’re announcing these updates alongside Safer Internet Day. Rolling out teen default settings globally builds on Discord’s existing safety architecture, offering strong protections for teens while still giving verified adults flexibility. We design our products with teen safety at the core and will continue working with safety experts, policymakers, and the Discord community to support meaningful long-term wellbeing for teens on our platform,” said Savannah, as quoted from Discord’s official website.

Privacy-First Age Verification

To support this system, Discord applies a privacy-first age assurance mechanism. Users can choose between facial age estimation or submitting official identification to a third-party vendor. In addition, Discord uses background age inference technology to help determine whether an account belongs to an adult.

These measures include several privacy safeguards, such as on-device video processing, rapid deletion of identity documents, and private verification status. Once verification is complete, users will receive a confirmation via direct message from Discord’s official account and can view their age status at any time in the My Account settings.

New Security Settings Apply by Default

Starting in early March, all Discord accounts will receive new age-appropriate default settings, including:

  • Automatic content filtering for sensitive material
  • Restricted access to adult-only channels and servers
  • A separate inbox for messages from unknown users
  • Warnings for friend requests
  • Stage speaking restrictions for verified adults only

These settings can only be changed by users who have been verified as adults.

Giving Teens a Voice

As part of this initiative, Discord has also introduced the Discord Teen Council, an advisory group made up of 10–12 teenagers aged 13–17. The council will provide direct feedback on safety, features, and online wellbeing.

Their insights will help shape future product development, policies, and educational programs. Applications are open until May 1, 2026, through Discord’s official website.

This global rollout builds on similar safety measures previously implemented in the United Kingdom and Australia. With these new policies, Discord aims to foster a safer, more supportive, and more responsible digital ecosystem for young users worldwide.
