Google is reportedly preparing to introduce a new standard for biometric security within the Android ecosystem. After years of Android face unlock being associated with simple 2D scanning via the front camera, the tech giant is now said to be developing a far more advanced system. If realized, this technology is believed to match the security level of Apple’s Face ID.
So far, most Android smartphones rely on a regular selfie camera to recognize users’ faces. While this method is fast and convenient, its security level remains limited. Because it only scans faces in two dimensions, the system is relatively easier to trick compared to 3D facial scanning technology. Low-light conditions can also affect its accuracy.
In contrast, Face ID on iPhones uses three-dimensional facial mapping. The system projects thousands of infrared dots to create a highly detailed facial model. As a result, authentication remains fast, precise, and secure even in dark environments. This is the standard Google is now reportedly aiming to achieve for next-generation Android devices.
Project Toscana and Google’s New Ambition
A report from Android Authority revealed the existence of an internal Google project called “Project Toscana.” This initiative is said to serve as the foundation for developing the next-generation face unlock system. Interestingly, the technology is claimed to remain compatible with the punch-hole camera design that is widely used in modern smartphones.
This means Google may not need to introduce a large top module such as a wide notch or visibly bulky sensors. Such an approach would be a significant advantage, as it preserves a full-screen design without compromising the device’s aesthetics.
Although technical details remain undisclosed, several speculations have emerged. One possibility is embedding an infrared projector directly beneath the OLED panel. With this method, the scanning components could be hidden under the display, resulting in a cleaner and more futuristic look. Similar technology has also been rumored for future iPhone generations.
Another alternative is that Google could revive its Soli radar technology. This feature was previously introduced with the Google Pixel 4, though its implementation was not fully mature at the time and was eventually discontinued in later generations. If redeveloped with a new approach and integrated more seamlessly beneath the display, Soli could serve as a supporting element for a more secure and responsive facial authentication system.
Potential Debut in the Pixel 11 Series
Leaks suggest that this new face unlock system could debut in the Google Pixel 11 and Google Pixel 11 Pro by late 2026. If accurate, this would mark a major leap forward for the Pixel lineup in terms of biometric security.
Until now, Android devices have primarily relied on fingerprint sensors either mounted on the side or embedded under the display as the main authentication method. With the introduction of 3D-based face unlock, users could gain an additional security option comparable to premium standards in the global smartphone market.
The technology is reportedly not limited to smartphones. Google is also said to be preparing a version for Chromebooks. However, implementation on laptops may take longer due to the different hardware integration requirements compared to smartphones.
If everything goes according to plan, Android may soon enter a new era of biometric security. The competition with Apple will become even more interesting, as innovation is no longer just about performance or camera capabilities, but also about protecting users’ personal data. For now, the public awaits official confirmation from Google regarding this major development.
